A free game like Minecraft, in your browser

Play a block game for free with no download: what Minecraft Classic and the Minecraft free trial give you, and what Cabane does differently.

Cabane is a free block-building game that runs in your browser, with no download and no account. It shares Minecraft’s blocks, survival and creative modes, but you look at the world from above, the way you do in Animal Crossing, and you tame creatures.

Free Minecraft: what Mojang offers

The full game is paid, but Mojang offers two ways to play without paying.

  • Minecraft Classic, at classic.minecraft.net, is the 2009 version, put back online for the game’s tenth birthday. It runs in a desktop browser with 32 blocks, no monsters, no hunger and no day-night cycle. You can invite nine friends with a link, but nothing is saved when you close the tab.
  • The Minecraft free trial lasts about 100 minutes, roughly five in-game days, in Survival mode. You have to install it, and online multiplayer is blocked.

What Cabane has in common with Minecraft

Each game rolls a random seed and builds the world from it: plains, rivers, forests, mountains, caves and a sea floor. In Creative mode, every block is unlimited and you can fly. In Survival, you gather, craft at the workbench and keep a sword handy for the night.

Underground, coal and copper turn up early; iron, gold and sapphire sit deeper. Amethyst grows high in the mountains, and fossil rock holds the bones of a skeleton to assemble.

How it differs from Minecraft

  • You see the world from above; the C key brings the camera closer, all the way to first person.
  • Twenty-two creatures live in the meadows, on the farm and in the sea. Each one is tamed with its favourite food, then moves into the habitat you build for it.
  • There are 574 blocks and objects to place, including sloped roofs that shape their own corners, ornate facades, furniture and lamps.
  • A day and its night last ten minutes.
  • Your solo game stays saved in your browser, and the Continue button brings it back.
  • Cabane plays with keyboard and mouse, a gamepad, or your fingers on a phone or tablet.

Playing together

Joining a friend costs nothing: they send you their server’s invitation link and you pick one of the thirteen characters. The play with friends guide walks through the Multiplayer screen. To keep a world online without leaving a computer on, Cabane servers start at €3.99 a month.
